Into the Desert

We have discussed the "awesomeness" of large, silent places such as deserts, woods, mountain tops, the ocean, and the wild. In your own words, what exactly is the sensation these places inspire even in those who do not seek to escape?  Which of these places would be the one you'd be most likely to run to? Why? RESPOND to the questions and then REPLY to two of your classmates.

  1. I think what is common to these places is the greatness, sacredness, and reverence that are beyond human strength, knowledge and technology, which also make people awe. I would be most likely to run to summit of the mountain at night. It is because I can see stars filled universe, feel wind and look around anywhere. It is associated with loneliness of human being. Furthermore, I can think about my own existence and recognition alone. Then I think about the faraway world, even in this small and narrow earth.

  2. I think those places have the people's thoughts who believe in the religions related to the places or people who came the place to escape from something. People who do not seek to escape would feel the energy and thoughts of them. I also think the building and the landscape themselves are already inspiring. In that situation, people would feel how small they are.

    1. That's interesting. Like Mt. Fuji, these places have a tradition that a lot of people came here and prayed. Their thoughts have been remaining, and their thoughts inspire landscape and make them sacred. I strongly agree with your statement that people would feel the small of human existence.

    4. I also think that people think their own presence is small in front of big buildings or landscapes. When I went Tokyo Sky Tree I felt it.

  4. I think that the common points among those places are greatness. People who visit such places can recognize the greatness which might be beyond the boundaries of human intellect. For example, if you go to the ocean or woods, you would feel the power of nature, and you feel small by comparing between people and nature. In addition, if you go to the church or somewhere related to religion, you could feel the power of human. The building was built by many people who has strong thoughs and feelings toward the religion. Therefore people who do not seek to escape would feel the greatness which is beyond the boundaries of human intellect.
I would be most likely to run to top of the high building. It is because I can see the society people established, and I can be honest with myself. I could understand how great and vast the society is, and I can rethink about my own existence and recognition.

  6. In my opinion, the sensation which is given by such places is calmness and refreshing. Most of these places have a good silence to concentrate on our meditation. Meditation is a good way to focus on internal mental activities. This is helpful to get a calmness in people's mind. Moreover, these places give us refreshing because its situation is different and make us forget something which is related to our anxiety.

  7. The place that I am most likely to stay is the top of the mountain; the mountain is a place where people can improve their minds and make people get released from the burden of life. I like the sound of insects and birds, and enjoy the sky is full of stars . Even among in those who do not seek to escape, I think they should go to the top of the mountain to let nature cure their bodies and minds. Enjoy the gift from the creator.

  8. these places inspire, even for those who do not try to escape, a feeling of peace, happiness, tranquility, relaxation, emptiness in the head. Also, an open mind, the purity of the air, the spirituality and the admiration of the landscape. The place where I can run is the ocean; because I find it beautiful, fascinating and I like the sound of the waves. I still dream of going to the end of the world and discover the lagoon of Bora Bora or Moorea.

  9. I think people are inspired when they look at what are made only naturally and calculated artifacts. They are sophisticated, beautiful and magnificent. They overwhelm people, stop their movement and too impressive to remember at a glance. I was inspired when I look up to the high buildings or mountains on the ground.

  10. Sometimes people choose to escape when they encounter difficulties. Because at the time, we would feel that we did not have enough ability to solve it. But this escape is special, people are escaping to find their true self. These people discard everything they have and create a new self. They are like the rebirth of a phoenix. so, if I want to escape, I will choose the top of the mountain. I think the sky is a sacred place, it is a place where 神仙(Chinese gods) lives in the myths and legends, and has a strong power. Then the top of the mountain is the closest to the sky. Standing there can make me feel strong and make me feel confident. Then, I might cheer up, find a new "road", re-enter the city, and live.
