Chris' Intentions

Chris was friendly and happy when he was with people. He made friends and even stayed in touch with Wayne Westerberg after he left Carthage, South Dakota.  He hardly seemed depressed. On the other hand, he went into the wilds of Alaska very badly prepared for the adventure and seemed determined to hurt his family. Some have suggested that he was tired of life and intended to die. How can these two very different images exist in the same man?  RESPOND to the POST and the REPLY to two classmates.

  1. I think his intelligence caused his ambivalent images. While feeling happiness surrounded by loving families and his friends, it seems that he became skeptical about the existence of society, human being and himself while indulging in thought.

    1. I agree with you. His good education affects his personality and leads to such a severe situation, his death.

    2. Citation
Wester-berg reflects, draining his third drink. “He read a lot. Used a lot of big words. I think maybe part of what got him into trouble was that he did too much thinking

    3. I think so too. He would think about many things from various perspectives because he was smart.

    4. I agree with you. He could not just be a smart good boy. It is because he read a lot and got various types of thoughts to the lives.

    5. I agree with you. I also think that his background strongly affects his action. Because he was really smart, maybe he took the reality too seriously.

    6. I think your idea is interesting. I agree that his intelligence did not allow him to live easily and comfortably, but I wonder if he loves his family.

    7. I agree with you all, I will like to add, above his intelligence I think he could have a mental problem, a normal person can not take so much risk

    8. I think this is normal and inevitable for Chris. Chris had a high degree of education before he decided to enter the wilderness, and his family conditions were good. In my opinion, this is very important. It’s like Chris’s knowledge and his active thinking have caused it all. He suspected that he was not perfect and not real enough, so he wanted to find the true self through some tempering. Finally he chose to enter the wilderness and stay away from the noise of the city.
(This is just my personal opinion. If there is an error, I hope everyone will point out.)

  2. I think that he was Maniac depression. In this disease, the patient will have a mental disorder and therefore shows an unstable emotional expression. Accordingly, he shows us some different personality which depends on his mental situation.

  3. I think people often have conflicting emotions. I think he hardly seemed depressed because he behaved not to make other people worry. I thought he brought up acting a good boy. On the other hand, he was tired of being good boy and he wanted to hurt his family. He wanted to kill himself because he did not like his past self.

    1. That's a good point, Tomoka.
As I said, He was intelligent people.
And then, maybe, He acted himself not to hurt his family or friends using his intelligence.

    2. I also think that " he wanted to kill himself" but I do not think that he actually meant to die. In my opinion, he already succeed to kill himself at the moment he started his odyssey because he could escape from what surrounded him in his past life. He did not want to die physically but mentally, I guess he probably wanted to be brand new him.

    3. I understand your idea. He could not express his feelings as well as he want. Because of the strict parents, he had to behave as a "good boy". He had continued to act the character for his parents as he entered high-level university and built the career, but he was just tired of such lifestyles, I think.

    4. "he wanted to kill himself" is good words to explain "Alex",I think. And acting never crossed my mind at all.

  5. In my opinion, I would say that he had both emotions in his mind. Even he did not know what to do with his tow different emotions exists inside of him and he could not express negative one to his friends and positive one to family. I think whoever it is, he just needed a person/thing to express his feelings as they are because I think he felt always somehow stifled. I also think, for him, going into the wild was the only way to be free from his frustrations caused by not being able to express his all of the emotions. This is why tow feelings against each other existed. I guess the reason why he did not prepared well for his odyssey was that he was just not a street smart person because according to his profile, he must have had no opportunities to learn how to survive in the wildness though he had a reputation of being intelligent and smart. Therefore, the lack of knowledge caused his death and it could be seemed like that he was intended to die

  6. In my opinion, Chris has the both positive and negative emotions in his mind and even for himself it was not possible to clear the mind. Because of this, he could not behave in the same way toward his family and his friends. It means that he could not express his feelings obediently.
Because of his family environment, he was really tired of the life and wanted to find out the meaning. This is why he started such unplanned odyssey, a long journey which he thought changes his life. For him, going into the wild was only the way to change the lifestyle and escape from the frustrating feelings. Through the journey, he wanted to find himself and the meaning of life. He hoped that he would clear the complicated feelings through the journey.

    1. I agreed with you. I also think that it would made such a big differences if he had a closed group of friends back home and a great loving family that he could rely on. Often families think that possessions and material stuff are enough and they don't show the right affection to their kids, especially when they are adolescents is when they need it the most.

  7. In my opinion, he is an ordinary man. Since everyone, even if there are good family, friends and company around you, should dream to escape from the background of you. However, most of us work off our frustration when we notice them. In his case, probably because of his family environment in his childhood, he hided his suffering inside completely, or he didn't how big his fatigue of life until he can't hold it.
Also, his contradiction is similar to literary persons' one.So I think he was very sensitive to both happiness of the relationship between people and sadness of life , and this is one of the reason of his contradiction.

    1. I like your points. Chris feels contradictory, so his character will become so elusive.I also though that he actually wanted to end his life. Let us continue to find the answer.

  8. What a great question. I think he was trying to find the meaning of his life and got focus in only one way to find it, he choose to go to Alaska and live in the wild. He did not mean to hurt anyone he just wanted to live his life differently. He wanted to start from scratch.

  9. In my opinion, I think that everyone has a lot of characteristic, different characteristic will shape the individual personality, just like Chris. He was happy when he with friends, but also he want to escape from his parents and peers. Chris seems very contradictory and elusive, those characteristic makes him become to a extraordinary person.

  10. I admire his courage. It is very hard to talk about his journey, it is a tragic story, pitying for certain and enervating for others. I read the book I could not emphasize a positive motivation, Not every adventure has an happy ending, it is staying for me completely unbolting.
