Personality

Continuing with today's discussion about Chapter 11 in "Into the Wild," how much of our personality do you think is the result of nature and how much is the result of nurture?  In other words, how much of who we are are we born with and how much do we acquire as a result of our environment at home and in life?
RESPOND to the post and REPLY to two classmates.

  1. I don’t know the biological point of view, but I think that personality is often formed by an acquired environment. In other words, although everyone has the nature personality, I think that the personality is easily changed due to the surrounding environment. But this may not apply to some people. Chris McCandless has extreme nature personality. I think he was a person who formed others’ personality rather than his personality was changed. His enthusiasm for the wild changed the person who met Chris, And his reckless and his death changed his family and Frank in negative way. For those with general (not extreme) personality, death, divorce, abuse etc. will change person's personality, for example as a negative way, and by seeing incredibly nature, feeling a sense of accomplishment, or having a conversation with a person, personality can be changed considerably as a positive way. considerably.

    2. I agree with you. Chris had an extreme nature personality which will not be understood by everybody. I think he was lonely and frustrated because nobody truly understood him, but I think the loneliness made him think that wild was one of the most sacred and special thing because only few people including him could understand the attraction of the wild. Therefore, I would say, the acquired environment reinforced his extreme nature personality.

  2. In my opinion, the core part of the personality is the result of nature. Regardless whether it is a personality called bad or good by our society. If the nature core personality is a bad personality, it would be covered by the other personality which was formed by the environment surrounding the one because people in the society will not like that person and obviously, the parents will try to reform the personality. However, the core personality given by nature would never change. It is just covered by the acquired environment such as parents. As people grow up, some will realize their core personality. Some natural core personality suits the society but some don't. That is why there are some people do ridiculous things. For example, enjoying killing others or animals for no reason. This is not negative at all but the people who are LGBTQ, some study shows that most of their sexual orientation is resulted by nature. Therefore, I think everybody has their core personality resulted by the nature, but it can be covered by the acquired environment.

  3. A person's personality is shaped through an interaction of two factors, their inherited tendencies and their environment. Inherited tendencies are aspects of one's personality passed on by one's parent, such as appearance. The environment, meanwhile, is the situation one grows up in, like relationship between people or events that occurred.
In addition to this, the personality forms during their childhood radically. Children creates their own personalities based on the influences from their parents who brought up them. Biologically, the role of parents is significant in child rising because children are shared parent's value or thought.
In the book, "Into the Wild", Chris McCandless had been influenced a lot by his family environments. As the text says, Chris was stubborn like his father. Moreover he once had the value shared by parents about career or money at least, and that is why he could graduate such high level college.
However, the personality is changed by the environmental factor. I am not sure why Chris had changed his mind and abandoned the original value. He tried to cut off the previous value or though and started to create new one by going into the wild. Through the journey as he experienced a lot of thing, he changed his personality gradually.
For these reason, I think, the personality is created by parents during the childhoods radically. But it is changeable because of the environment factors.

  5. This is a hard question. As a parent, In my opinion, a person's personality might effects what he is like more than nurture. In chapter 11, what I understood is Chris's parents had tried their best to let their children had better lives. There is no perfect parents in the world. No wonder, Chris's parents loved their children and had taught them to be better people. For what I have learned about Chris, I would say that what led to his death was his way strong personality.

    1. I agree with you, as a parents, I think everyone should be responsible for themselves. Of course, family and society have a great influence, but I think Chris’s approach is a selfish and self-willed behavior for me. .

  6. According to the personality theory of psychologist Eric Erikson, he believes that a person's life is influenced by both physical, psychological and social interactions. It is said that half of the character comes from heredity and half comes from nurture. Scientists have shown that if the genetic material DNA obtained from one parent can determine the physical characteristics of the child, it will also affect certain aspects of their personality. I also met a child. His personality is similar to Chris. He was very stubborn. Black and white were very distinct. After 1 years, he was diagnosed with multiple Asperger syndrome. I don't know that Chris has congenital problems or not, From my perspective, his family gradually shaped his personality in the unconscious.

  7. I think our personality is greatly influenced by our environment. Personality changes as we grow up and personality when we were children and the present are not the same. It indicates we are influenced by our environment. I think people get similarities when they spend time together, so personalities are similar in family.

  8. In my opinion, the environment and nature are both important.

Thinking about the case of twin children, they are different in their personality between them. In the prospect of the biology, they are almost same animal. However, they show us some difference in some aspect. Their characteristic is different, size is deferent, and favor is different. I think that these are came from their environment.

On the other hand, there are something which is inherited from their parents, genes. Most pf physical traits are inherited from their ancestor. It is impossible to change them.

Therefore, our personality is the result of their nature and nurture.

  9. I don't think this is natural. I think that people's personality is created by the living environment. Newborn children don’t understand anything, even if they have memories. According to scientific research, when people are five and seven years old, their memories will refresh. No matter how powerful, how thoughtful, and individualized this person is, when the growth period is reached, people's memories will be refreshed, and they still have to start from "zero". When people grow up, what they see and what they experience will be remembered. And when they come into contact with society, they learn a lot and generate a lot of ideas. At this time, people will think about the correctness of one thing and get the results they want. At the same time, people's personality will be decided by themselves.

  10. I think that sociability is the part of our personality that is the result of nature. Being sociable, allows us to live and evolve in society, to be able to create human relationships. Consciousness is the result of education. It allows us to differentiate right from wrong. We are born with our parents, it is up to them to educate us, to teach us to respect society, we earn respect and good values.
It's basically about learning to live together, harmoniously.
