Gender in the Wild

In our discussion, we remarked that throughout the book, Krakauer refers only to male adventurers.  Why do you suppose this is?  Is he guilty of gender bias?  Or are women less likely to go on these kinds of odysseys?  In other words, are women more likely to choose other ways to "find themselves" and test themselves? Personality

Continuing with today's discussion about Chapter 11 in "Into the Wild," how much of our personality do you think is the result of nature and how much is the result of nurture?  In other words, how much of who we are are we born with and how much do we acquire as a result of our environment at home and in life?

Into the Desert

We have discussed the "awesomeness" of large, silent places such as deserts, woods, mountain tops, the ocean, and the wild. Chris' Intentions

Chris was friendly and happy when he was with people. He made friends and even stayed in touch with Wayne Westerberg after he left Carthage, South Dakota.  He hardly seemed depressed. On the other hand, he went into the wilds of Alaska very badly prepared for the adventure and seemed determined to hurt his family. Some have suggested that he was tired of life and intended to die.
