As poetry is pregnant with meaning, it usually doesn't say too much.So we try to find out what an author wants to say by imagining and putting ourselves in the author's shoes. Then our empathy and comassion will develop. That is one value in terms of phychologial benefit.
ReplyDeleteThe second reason is related to a cultural aspect. For example, when we see an object, a perception of it varies among cultures. So we will notice cultural differences especially when we read a poetry from a foreign country. That will help you to open your mind and let you get new perspectives which you would never come up with.
Finally, reading poetry is not just about to increace your intelligence, but to enrich your heart.
No matter how hard we try to understand a meaning of a poetry, which an author intends to say, it cannot be totally understood. Instead, we can "feel" the essence of the poetry. Our heart need to be fertilized.
We cannot see the truth only by our eyes, but we also need hearts.
So poetry helps our heart to be enriched.
Wow, you wrote a lot!!! ''The our empathy and commission will develop.'' I really like this sentence because it describe the whole first paragraph. It really make sense for me too.
DeleteI agree, with you in second paragraph, ''read a poetry from other country will open your mind''. I think this is really good sentence of this whole passage because it tell that, if you try to learn more poetry from other country, your mind will be open
I agree with the first to paragraph but I disagree with last one. The first paragraph is very interesting because describe the idea of the poetry. The second paragraph is a general idea about the relation between the culture and the poetry. The final one has a lot of important information but I don't think so that the poetry is a resource to increase the intelligence.
DeleteFirst of all, I would like to says that, you pick a really tough question for me to response. In my opinion, the poetry is just a reading passage, that the author's trying to describe something in difference ways. The words in poetry is really confuse, tricky and some of hard vocabulary.I think that the value is depend on the poetry because in my culture the price of the poetry are not the same. I have no idea about the other countries.I cannot respond much more than this, because I don't know much about the poetry.
ReplyDeleteI like that you say the truth about the topic and I agree about the way that the poetry express in the different cultures. I like this passage because I think that it is a good description: "the author's trying to describe something in difference ways".
DeleteEach culture in the world has the different way to express ideas and feelings. I am not the person who is fanatic to the poetry but I know a little about it. The best authors in Colombia poetry in my opinion are: Rafael Pombo and Jose Asuncion Silva. In their poetry, they express ideas about the everyday life with metaphors. The principal value that poetry expresses in my culture is the love. This is an example about it:
ReplyDeleteWhen the girl still sick
came one morning
and toured, unsteadily
the neighboring mountain,
brought, among a bouquet of wildflowers
hides a chrysalis,
placed in his room, close
White cot ...
Jose Asuncion SIlva
I like what what said that '' in the world has different way to express ideas and feeling. That's make a lot of sense to me because the cultures are not the same and also it is hard to describe for the other people understand the poetry well.

ReplyDeleteI believe poetry is the expression of feelings and emotions through words. Using an elevated language and verbal imagery to make it more transcendental and different from daily language. Poets are always influenced by their cultural context and they not only write about love or hurt, but also war and freedom in relation to their historical context. In every case, poets write to express what they feel inside and to be heard, to transmit their thoughts to the readers so they also relate to those feelings. I believe that just by reading poetry it fills our souls and minds to make us stronger, to know we're not alone, and to make us grow as human beings.
ReplyDeleteI'm not from this class but i miss St Mikes so much! We all miss you from Colombia, Pat. Hope you read this and remember us!
