The stage manager says that Grovers Corners is a town of ordinary people living ordinary lives. What are some of the ways that the playwright shows us their ordinary lives?

  1. Hello, this is Yanyan. In my opinion, they just describe their daily life. For example, the students walk on the main street of the town when they finish their classes, the milk man Howie expresses the milk, Joe expresses the newspaper, and so on. They also use the simple words to make audience understand this play.

  2. Hello, this is Yoko. I think that the playwright shows us how people spend the time and how they are feeling about their lives. For instance, Dr. Gibbs mentioned about Mr. Stimson by saying like "Some people ain't made for small town life." Moreover, most of the characters use a contraction, and it shows us the "real" English in 1901.

  3. Hi, this is Tsubasa.
In this question, I have to define the meaning of “ordinary lives” to explain the way that playwright shows us. I think the definition is the way of life most of the people in the era spend.
People in Grover Corner are lower middle class as Mr. Webb showed. So, people like them account for a lot of parts of society. They are ordinary people. The stage manager said “Nobody very remarkable ever come out of it, s’far as we know.” They are in the way: in their growing up, in their marrying, in their living, and in their dying.

  4. Hi, this is Mone. In Act 1, the playwright shows us ordinary life by expressing scenery of the town and action of people in detail. For example, at the beginning of Act 1, the playwright shows what Mrs.Gibbs and Mrs.Webbs garden are like. It helps us imagine real life of people who live in this small town.

  5. Hello, this is Kaho Ikegami. I think that the playwright shows us a town of ordinary life by describing scenes of daily life. For example, the playwright describes the scene of breakfast. Mothers make breakfast, wake their children up and they eat breakfast and talk about not special topics. I think this is a very ordinary scene.
