The Story of an Hour

In an academic article or an essay, writers use connectors and transitions to show the relationship between sentences and paragraphs. Fiction is not academic writing. Authors must use language to build tension, create mood, and move from scene to scene.  What kind of language does Kate Chopin use to move through her story? In other words, how does she create flow, make transitions between scenes, and build tension?

  1. I think that the dig difference between academic articles and fiction is figurative language. In fiction figurative languages are used so many times. For example, in “The Story in an Hour” Kate writes “storm of grief”, “she was drinking in a very elixir of life through that open window.” These expressions create mood and stimulate reader’s imagination and are fun to read, though these languages make it difficult to understand for English learners I think.

Kate also use short sentences to create tension. For example, when Mrs. Mallard starts to feel joy of freedom, Kate writes in short sentences or phrases using many commas like “What was it? She did not know……But she felt it, creeping out of sky, reaching toward her through the sounds, the scents, the color that filled the air.” This creates the tension and expresses the strong power Mrs. Mallard feels.

  2. In my opinion, there are differences between article and short story; for example, development following time, development following spaces, symbolism, fictions and etc. Well, the author uses a lot of figurative languages that make us find and deliberate about them. Especially, development following time and spaces is the most important thing in this short story. This connects scenes without transitions. Transitions rather disturb the tension of this short story. Therefore, Chopin use a variety of figurative languages and help us guess about the meaning of those words.

  3. For The Story of an Hour. the author use the scenes to symbolize the feeling of Louise. She is at first floor since the news of her husband death received, and she feels so sad and weep at this time. Her feeling start to transfer once the scene has changed to her room which on second floor. she start thinking about the things that has never happened in her life which includes freedom. we can clearly see a line that for her emotion move upward rapidly when she is thinking how her life would be so much different without her husband. At this time, she can see the open square and blue sky which means she feels freedom is coming into her life. the author wrote "she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of victory" which means her emotion is reach the top of the mountain. in few seconds, she sees her husband open the door and come into the house. she died because all of her thoughts are fake. she falling down to first floor as falling down of the mountain. Her emotion changed again and this time the sadness take her life.

  5. I think Kate use a lot of symbolic language. She creates the mood or the tension by using symbols. Furthermore, she makes us to think about what the symbols of the places are by ourselves. It makes us more tense and imaginative when we read the fiction. Also, she never tell what she wants to say, so we would think about that and we could imagine by ourselves. Writers can make tension or mood by making us to imagine the situation or expression in fictions.
These things make big differences. Academic articles have to tell what they want to say and make sense; however, fictions don't have to tell what they want to say clearly or don't need to clear. Also, we'd better imagine in fictions but not academic articles. It can be more attractive to us.

    1. I do agree that by hiding or omitting some information the author creates a subtle suspense that make the story more interesting and intriguing.

  6. The main way that Kate creates flow in the story is through figurative language and rich description about the main character. However, the change of place where the character is also seems to have bigger significance to the story as it may symbolize the wave of her emotions.
Furthermore, the way that the main character is referred changes from "Mrs. Mallard" to "Louise" when she receive the news that her husband is dead as possible representation of her freedom, not being only someones wife but herself.

  7. In Kate Chopin’s short story of “The Story of an Hour”, the author illustrates the unfair life of women at the past in a dramatic scene with an imagery type of language. This short story speaks in a figurative language in order to draw the scene using several similes and metaphors such as, “a sob came up into her throat and shock her as a child who has cried itself to sleep continues to sob in its dreams.” The used figurative language transfers emotions to see, hear, feel, taste and smell the case of Mrs. Mallard. The story begins with telling the situation of Mrs. Mallard before and after receiving the bad news about her husband. The story follows that by describing her attitude and reaction toward a situation at that time which is obviously different than nowadays. With heavily using similes and metaphors, the author show her self-talk and dreams about her new brightening part of life which could give her the long awaited freedom. After that, with a quick change of the events, the author transfers the sound of her sister when knocking the door and the feelings of her while deciding to open the door. The author brings the last scene with a sudden change of the story’s actions and let you imagine how her feelings were shocking her mind after flying in dreams. The author describes her confused reaction which is unusual, but just to let you feel her with the lost freedom of life. Those feeling are hard to illustrate in few words, however, the author speaks in short meaningful words in order to let live the story and its fluctuation of emotions.

  8. The story of an hour denotes the beauty of English literature. Reading a fiction, it must be difficult to notice how the writer takes readers from one scene to another; however, the author of this story made it way simpler for readers to know how the story moves along and build tension by using some clue words.
The subordinating conjunction "when" is used several times by the author to indicate a transition from one scene to another. For example, when intelligence of the railroad disaster was received, when the storm of grief had spent itself she went away to her room alone, when a sob came up into her throat. It is obvious that when we see a sentence starting with a subordinating conjunction "When", we can't wait to hear the next part of the sentence since we think that the next part of the sentence is what that completes the meaning of that sentence. Moreover, the author uses two different ways to build up tension in her story. First, by using questions such as what was it? Louise? Second, by quoting the words of characters directly, for example, "Go away. I am not making myself ill."

  10. In "The Story of an Hour" Kate Chopin used figurative language for creating scenes. Similes and metaphors are used for creating mood. For example, in a part of the story Kate Chopin says, "sob came up into her throat and shock her as a child...." In addition, the author placed some expressions in the story which build tension and make the reader to go through the entire story.
Regarding the flow of the story I will just say that the story is written in an explanatory way and its scenes are nicely placed one after another without using too many connectors. However, in parts the author used "when" to show time relationship between two actions or happenings.

  11. There is a difference between academic writing and fictions. In the Story of an Hour Kate Chopin uses a figurative language such as symbolism and imagery. These two helps the reader understanding the hidden meaning between the lines. She shows emotions in different positions and places. Also she describes the moment very deeply. And through that the reader figure out the scene and tension created. I think the body of the story was more important the the ending. Because she dedicates all her senses in a very beautiful words.

  13. In "The Story Of An Hour," Chopin introduces tension showing us how fragile Louise's heart is; this fragility is the first thing that we know about her. This idea lead us to the twisted end in a ingenuous way. In my opinion, the author uses her "heart disease" to express her emotional condition, no just like something physical. I think it refers to her "physical heart" and also to her "emotional heart". In addition, Chopin use a smart structure to make us flow throw the story. The author uses two skills to do that: the extension of the text and the sophistication of it. Chopin uses simple sentences to describe the first situations: for example, when Louise is noticed about her husband's death. However, Kate Chopin creates sophisticated lines full of metaphors and imagery to express the feelings of the woman. Also the extension of he text is used to lead our minds through the story. The author spends most of the part of the story to transmit us Louise's emotions, her reaction to the new idea of being free. In contrast, Chopin announces us the death of the woman in a few lines. So, when Louise dies, nobody knows what exactly she feels. Chopin leaves the reader free to think about the final scene, like an incitement to reflection of the story.

  14. Academic article is different then fiction because in the article they focus on vocabulary and sentences structure, but in fiction they use figurative languages. For instance, in this story Kate Chopin, the authors, use the spring to describe new life. Also, we can infer that Louise is from rich family when she talks about the views from her room.
