  4. In my opinion one possible reason for Tom wanting to run away was that he did not feel completely free. He felt oppressed by maybe his mother or his economical stability. I think he believed that he could do more about his life that he already had. Maybe he just wanted freedom and being able to live his life the way he wanted to without his mother orders.

    1. Your opinion is interesting. I couldn't come up with the reason: Tom's economical stability. I also agree that his hope to be independent is a major cause of his action.

  5. His mom says something mean to Tom. She says Tom is arrogant like a super star in the theatre. Tom does not feel well when he hears that. So Tom goes away.

  6. I feel Tom has more Northern idea than Southern idea.
Because of Northern idea, he wants to respect his own possibility.
However, his mother has Southern idea which respect their own family and society.
In that difference, Tom is annoyed by his mother and try to escape from his mother.

    1. I agree with you because I also think that he had different ideas about his future or the way hi wanted to like his life. I think he doesn't like the society so he need to go away because he doesn't feel happy being there. And his mother is so closed mind as him that neither or them will chance each other thinking so both feel frustrated because of their different believes.

  8. I think that Tom is still at difficult age(rebellious) and his mother always complains to Tom, so he is fed up with that and did not want to stay with his mother.

    1. I think Tom is still juvenile, so it is difficult to control himself. That may be why he is boring and also wants to evade his mother.

  9. Why he may want to run away is that Tom doesn't trust his mother because he is always annoyed by her. Nagging him makes the distance between Tom and his mother. Namely, he wants to keep his distance from his mother.

  10. I think that is because he did not like the way of talking, and her character of persisting past. First, he was annoyed by her advice that he should have dinner in such a strict way. Also, he was tired of her story of Blue Mountain because she talked about it many times and the story had no reality.

  11. He does not really want to run away. He thinks he should do that but he is to lazy and spoiled to leave the easy way to survive that he has now. He has to think and organize his own new life, but years where he has just thought that was not life stucked him in something like a glass box from where he sees the life of the others to go doing nothing.

    1. It might be true, Tom has no reason to stuck with his mother.
However, his mother has Southern America idea that she respect her home, society and family. I think that "culture" makes him difficult to run away from his mother.
