Characters' super objectives

What do the characters in the play want? Do you think they will achieve their goals? This answer may change as you read further in the play.

  1. I think Tom wants to be free in some way, he wants to be able to do the things that he want to do and not have the load of his family. I think Laura wants to not care what others think of her, she wants to not feel different maybe to find a gentlemen caller and get married and Amanda wants what any other mother would want for their children but maybe she is thinking more about herself that what is best for them so it makes the things more complicated. I think at the end of the play Laura will get married and Tom will follow his way and Amanda will live alone in her department or maybe with Laura and her husband.

  3. Amanda seemed to want to live a happy life of hers by depending on her children. Although she started a part-time job, but the main purpose of it was not to make living by herself but to support Laura's marriage, which might lead her life to be wealthy. Moreover, there were some actions she cared only herselves such as the last part of scene iii. I think Tom wanted to act just as he wanted to do. One of his remarks showed his complaint of his job, so his goal would especially be obtaining a better career. Laura also wanted to be independent from her mother, but still cannot give up believing that the family should live together. I hope Tom could find the best way of life with higher salarly, and Laura could get married to a man who could afford to care her family and live with Amanda. Then Amanda would realize the true meaning of the value of family, which was not just earning money.

    1. Does Tom want higher salary? I don't agree with you. It is sure that he complains to his job, but he doesn't say that he hope high salary. However, the others which you points out are good!

    2. I think Tom does not care about his wage. However, he claims about his money, just because if he had money, he can write. He needs money to live while he is writing and support his family. This is why he claims about his wage. So, his super object is not to earn more.

    3. I agree some of your thoughts. Tom's family wants to have a happy and easy life. But it is hard for them to achieve it.

  4. Amanda wants not to be alone. Women in that era, 1930's, cannot live alone, because the rights of women was not so established as today. She cannot help telling her children what to do. She tries to control them, because she afraid she would be alone.
For Laura, Amanda wants her to get her own job or find a man who supports her. In scene2, Amanda thinks Laura might not get job, so her feelings ,that she wants Laura to find gentleman caller, stronger than before scene2.
For Tom, Amanda does not want him let go. She lost her husband in the past: he ran away from her. And she does not want Tom be like that. She needs Tom, as a man who supports and protects her.

Tom wants to be independent from his family. However, he may know his mother cannot live alone and his sister is not able to get job. I feel he thinks his family need someone protects them. That's why he sticks with his family. And also, he seems to be lost his way to live. I feel he try to establish or know "how he should live."

Laura wants to be calm in her life. She does not like to fight with others (or she does not have enough strength to fight). She just want to live calm, and for that, she tried to have job, but she dropped out from her school. Now, after dropped out from her school, she may need to find some one who support her to live in calm. However, she was not able to find such person because of her personality. She tries to figure out a conflict that she wants to be something, but she cannot make a first step for that desire.

I think their goal will achieve.
Laura is fragile but not weak; glass is easy to break because of that solidity. And also, life is full of surprise. No one can tell she will never have any single gentleman caller.
Tom will not obey his mother. He may figure out how to support his mother while he is independent from his family.
Amanda will never be alone. Tom and Laura know how she felt when their father ran away from her, even if Amanda's characteristic made her husband ran, they know that she must be sad. That's why they cannot leave her alone. And also, they are family. Bond which is called "family" is not easy to break, even if family member wanted to break, it still remains.

    1. Very deep analysis but i do not agree with the happy end. . I mean, it is good because you have a positive view of the life, but i think that T.W. is going to show us how difficult is the life, in particular a that time. To realize big projects is not so easy. Somethime you need to be happy with the little things that the life gifts you every day. For Tom the movies, for Laura the Glassa Managerie and for Amanda the Blue Mountains memories.

  5. What Amanda hopes is high status of her family. She wants to be seen as high status family. Therefore, she demands family to act as high status family, for example, she nags Tom to keep table manners, and she is concerned that Laura has no boyfriend. I think her purpose will fail, because her hope needs family members though Tom and Laura don't obey her.
As for Laura, she hopes calmness and freedom. It is obvious that she is introvert and wants peace. On the other hand, she wants to be free from Amanda's interference and restriction. They are ambivalent for her because she has to give up calmness in order to get freedom. I'm not sure which way she will take.
What does Tom hope? It can seem that he wants to be free from his mother. It is sure, but I think it is not perfect. What he does is only to resist his mother. He doesn't run away from his family to be free though he can. In short, he cannot be cruel because his salary is needed for family. So, Why is he aggressive? The reason is burden of responsibility to family and annoying from his mother's nagging. He indirectly expresses complaint to them. Maybe, he will have to decide which way he takes : self or family.

    1. I felt "self or family" is a good and exact phrase for describing the situation of Tom. I want him to achieve both.

    4. I don't think Amanda wants to have a high status of her family. In my opinion, she was looking for (insurance)of the future life for her family, specialy for Laura and Tom.She knew that one day she will die and she want to make sure that her children will be fine.Tom was able to work and could support himself but Laura could do nothing and that was making Amanda crazy and pushing her to find a solution for her daughter but getting married to somebody nice and able to give her daughter good life even when Tom is gone to live his life and when she will not be there,i mean she died.

  6. I think Amanda wants Laura and Tom to make a success of their lives and Amanda will pressure her children. because she once had a chance to became a rich woman but she missed a big opportunity. So she regrets her past and persists in a success.Tom wants to be free from his mother and his enviroment.Laura is very reserved person and she wants to shut up within her own world.

I think Amanda's dream won't come true. because Laura is so shy and she ran away in her glass collection(In movie) and did not face with reality.I don't have much information of Tom but maybe he is not a passionate person so he will not be able to change his life.In my opinion, only Laura's dream will come true

    1. I think Tom is a passionate person and he will be able to be free from his mother. Because he always argues with her earnestly and he claims his real emotion. He wants to be independent of her strongly.

    4. I want to know why you think it is only Laura whose dream will come true. I like the point you focused on such as Amanda's past.

  7. Amanda always complains of her children's action because she wants to be happy by being taken care of her children. In particular, she wants Tom will take care of her in the near future. On the other hand, she seems to be passive about searching for Laura's boyfriend because of Laura's physical disability. To put it differently, Amanda already give up searching for caller because her daughter isn't willing to get her daily due to her daughter's disability.
Tom wants to be free from their family because his "family" always bother him. By now, it seems to run counter to between he and his mother. On the other hand, although he wants to be released from his family, he concerns his sister because he has been got along with her. He may not be free because of her.
Laura does not want to behave like what her mother says. She probably nevertheless trusts her mother, she has no confident in herself. That is why she does not take her mother's advice.
In the end of this work, Tom will be free in a way. However, he will not walk away from Amanda and Laura. Although Amanda will be superficially alone, she will be supported by her children. And Laura will marry someone by searching her caller because she is not weak but merely fragile.

  8. Amanda wants to be a perfect mother. She taught Tom manners and made laura marry as soon as possible. She feels that if her children are rude, it will be shame for her. her husband left the house so she is responsible for growing the children by herself. I think that she wants other people not to think the family has troubles because there isn't her husband.
Tom wants to resist her mother. she tries to make him a sensible man. He is ovrewhelmed because he is controlled by her. I think that he wants to be free and go his own way.
Laura loses self-confidence because she is crippled. However her mother gives some orders so she wants to depend on something. I think that she reflects herself into her glass collection. She is little weak and the feature is similar to the quality of glass. I don't have precise proof yet but I think that glass is important in this play because it is a part of the title.

    1. I am completely agree with you. I got the same thoughts when I read about Amanda and Laura. Amanda wants to be the perfect mother. well, I think every mother wants to be the perfectest one. Also, Tom is showing that he doesn't want to be controlled. Additionally, Laura is pretty fragile and she lost her confidence rapidly.

  9. In general, right now, the errors I'm seeing are with verb forms and word forms, but the ideas being expressed are clear and well-thought-out. Some of you write very well and it's clear you understand what is going on in our story, so I wish you would speak up in class. All-in-all, I think you all have a good grasp of the play even if it is difficult.

  10. I think Tom wants to suppert his familly because his sister his disability and they lave in small house. I think he will found a good job by writing and get more moeny. Maybe Laura wants more beautiful glass menagerie and get married. I think she will get married and her husband rich man. Amanda wants to be the best mother to take care for her children. T think she will be grandmother and she will lave with her son or daughter.

    1. I desagree with you respect the fact that Tom actually wants to support his family. I don't think that's what you could say is his super objective. But about Laura getting married and Amanda living with her I agree with you. However I actually think that Laura will get over the glass menagerie and because of that she will meet his gentelmen caller and that's is kind of Amanda's super objective, get her daugher to marry.

    2. I agree with you,Amanda want to be a good mother for he children but the way she tries to talk to Tom about how he is supposed to go to work for supporting the family is not always nice. She needed a good strategy to make Tom understand the situation of the family and to motive him to go to work nicely whenever Tom does not like the job at the warehouse as a shoemaker.Tom was concern about his own life too, about his adventure he could not find at the warehouse,it is stressful for him but Amanda was acting to Tom like she was conerning only about her daughter Laura but not about Tom's dream.

    3. I think your opinion is really unique and interesting, but I disagree with your opinion.
I think there is no evidence that Tom wants to support his family. If he wants to support his family, he might not claim that much. Also, I cannot find any evidence that Laura wants to have new "glass menagerie." Is desire for having new "glass menagerie" can be reason for marriage? I don't think so.
However, your opinion and point of view is really interesting and unique! I like your sense of reading.

  12. I am not completely positive about that.I think Tom will not achieve his goals: leaving the apartment and become a poet. Well he will write poems, but at home, continuing to argue with his mother. Amanda will achieve her goals because Laura, at the end, will find a gentleman caller and Tom, as i said, will stay at home with her. About Laura i can say that she will be happy but,her goal, for now, is to stay in the apartment with Amanda, Tom and the Glass Managerie so, if she marry the gentlemen caller, she does not achieve her goal

  13. In my opinion, I think that the characters will reach their personal goals. I think Tom is going to become a writer and complete his dream. In addition, I am not sure whether or not Laura will complete her objetives and goals; perhaps she could find her ideal gentleman caller. Amanda's goal is already going on because her goal is that her children have a better future. That's why she was introducing Laura to College. Also, she puts a lot of pressure on Tom. The way that they both can succeed in life.

  14. I think,in the end of this play each character will accomplish his mission.I say that because Amanda the mother is showing in the play how she is concern about her children lives wherever she was fighting with them.It could be the result of the stress she had about their future or the future of her children because she said she is old and maybe she does not care about her life, thinking about like she's gonna die.But in my opinion, everything will be alright,Laura will get married and Tom will find a good job,i mean he will realize his dream,Amanda will be happy to have grand children from Laura but she will not enjoye too much with them because she will die peaceful.
