Why are two former SSRs so different?

A couple of you asked an interesting question as you summed up your interview with Gulnora.
Since we are missing so much classroom time, I thought we could use our blog to discuss this question. A couple of you asked how it could be that Uzbekistan and Ukraine have become such different countries since leaving the USSR. One seems to have freedom of the press and citizens who are comfortable with their government. The other seems to be a country that has to worry that the press is heavily influenced by the government and other countries. I want you to think very carefully how you might explain this. Respond to the post question and then reply to two classmates. Try not to just agree or disagree. Think carefully about what you are responding to.

  1. I think there are several possible reasons. One might be the difference of constitutions between Ukraine and Uzbekistan. According to Gulnora, Uzbek constitution grantee to be free. I don't know Ukrainian constitution, though. Another reason might be that the article's information about Ukraine we read is as of 2016, which is quite old. Ukraine and Uzbekistan are relatevely new countries. So, the circumstance of Ukrainian press as of 2020 might be different and more independent.

    1. I agree your opinion!
Gulnora reported us a current information about Uzbekistan; however the article that we read is published in 2016, I think it is hard to compare about each country. I mean if we should compare and consider about the circumstance of each country, we have to acquire the today's information about Ukraine too.

  2. I think the difference between Ukraine and Uzbekistan was caused by the degree of contribution in each country's first president.
As reported by Gulnora, the first president of Uzbekistan was a very great man because he made Uzbekistan independent without any conflict and he developed fundamental systems in Uzbekistan. I am not sure about the circumstance of Ukraine at that time, but I think that that reason has a possibility to cause a difference in each country.

  4. I think that the difference between Ukraine and Uzbekistan is the independence consciousness of each country. According to Gulnora, Uzbekistan is a big family now and they do not want to return completely to the USSR. It means that Uzbekistan has a high sense of independence, so I think thath it is the difference between two countries.

  5. In my opinion, the difference between Ukraine and Uzbekistan is due to the difference between pro-Russia and anti-Russia. I think the attitude of the country after independence from the Soviet Union has influenced the current situation.

  6. This question calls for some resourches and we should acquire more additional information, but, if you ask me, I can answer that Russia targeting at Ukraine as a foe. Accordingly, the difference you mentioned is whether each country is for or against Russia.

  7. I think interference of Russia makes this difference. Russia interferes with Ukraine heavily, so Ukraine is not free. On the other hand, Russia interferes with Uzbekistan not heavily, so Uzbekistan is free.

    1. That's a new viewpoint for me! Why does Russia influence to these countries differently? I think how close to Russia is a reason. Ukraine has a direct border with Russia, but Uzbekistan doesn't.
