Why are two former SSRs so different?

A couple of you asked an interesting question as you summed up your interview with Gulnora.
Since we are missing so much classroom time, I thought we could use our blog to discuss this question. A couple of you asked how it could be that Uzbekistan and Ukraine have become such different countries since leaving the USSR. One seems to have freedom of the press and citizens who are comfortable with their government. The other seems to be a country that has to worry that the press is heavily influenced by the government and other countries. I want you to think very carefully how you might explain this. Respond to the post question and then reply to two classmates. Try not to just agree or disagree. Think carefully about what you are responding to.
