Gender in the Wild

In our discussion, we remarked that throughout the book, Krakauer refers only to male adventurers.  Why do you suppose this is?  Is he guilty of gender bias?  Or are women less likely to go on these kinds of odysseys?  In other words, are women more likely to choose other ways to "find themselves" and test themselves?
