Buddhism

After reading about Buddhism for a week, which of it's ideas, if any, do you find the most difficult to understand? The easiest? How similar or different are its ideas from your own experience?

RESPOND to the question and then REPLY to two classmates.

  1. For me the most difficult theme of Buddhism was the Eight Fold path because at the beginning it was difficult to understand, also I had no idea Buddha was not a god so imagining a "religion" with no god at the beiginning made no sense for me. The easiest part was the Bodhisattva because it was very interesting so you could learn it quicker and the Four Nobel truths.

This ideas are very different to my experiences because I had imagine that Buddha was a god superior than the humans and with this class I could learn that he was just an example to follow.

    1. I agree with you Camilo about the eight fold cause it was a topic that for me was really confusing and has many thing that you have to memorize, and the thing of Buddha wasn't new for me but I also thought in a beginning that he was a superior person I continue believing it cause he is a step forded that us.

    2. Yeah, imagining a religion without a God is kind of hard.

  2. The easiest topic from the Buddhism for me was learning about the Bdhisattva cause it was very similar to Jesus and I know many things about Jesus so it was easy for me learn about this person. The difficul part was the fourth noble truths and that implies the eight fold it was difficult for me cause it was many information and all connected so I got confuse in several times.

The ideas Buddha has about how to understand the word are very different from what I think in some aspects but similar in others, for example I think we should use the things we have to make others happy but without getting apart from them, the most different characteristic is the one of how he explain suffering.

    1. You're right. Learning about the Budhisattva was easy because it is very similar to Jesus.

    2. Yeah Budhisattva is a very simple topic at least for us the Catholics but the four noble truths and the eight fold path are more complicated

    3. I entirely agree with what is saying Sergio, because our Budhisatva in Christianity is Jesus and because of his we can relate this two religions

    4. It is a nice point of view, when you compare Buddhism and Christianity you can find many similarities, for example the Budhisadva that in the cristian religion is named jesus.

  3. The easiest idea topic for me is the Eightfold Path because it is very similar to what I believe how we should act. I haven't found a difficult idea so far.

From my own experience, this idea isn't so different. I believe we should treat each other with respect no matter the circunstancies. So in a way it is very similar to the Eightfold Path.

  4. The easiest topic about Buddhism was talking about the buddhisatva, because I could related with Christianity and for me is a topic that I really feel identify with and the reason is that in Christianity we have some type of costumes that are close with the fact of helping people before ourselves and help them being better persons every day by the way of God

On the other hand, until now I haven't found any difficult topic because really I have like every one of them and Im interested on learning them each day more.

  5. Buddhism is saying that craving for happiness isn't a lasting thing so we shouldn't depend on it. It was easy to understand that we must be in the middle way of extremes, so that we can recover if terrible thing happens to own. I know it is not that purpose of Nirvana but I think it is the one of the idea for nirvana.
When I broke my phone I didn't get so disappointed because I am not vey attached to it. So I think it is similar to this that I am in the middle way. I don't be in the extreme of pleasure of having phone or extreme of disappointed of losing phone.

    1. I agree with Yuna. Also in our everyday life we can apply Buddhism teachings as in her celphone.

    2. I understand your point of view Yuna. Maybe it is a good example of what the middle way means.

    3. I have to disagree with you. As far as my understanding goes the purpose of Buddhism is to reach happiness by ridding yourself from craving and pleasures.

  6. The theme of Buddhism was difficult for me to understand because I have not studied about Buddhism and there were a lot of difficult technical terms in the text: Nilvana, the eight fold path... However, the topic was fresh and interested for me.

These Buddhist teachings have nothing in similar with what I have learned and lived so far

  7. Personally the easiest thing for understanding about Buddhism was the four noble truths and the Eight fold Path because they are telling how people have to act for being better that is a characteristic that every religion has, they are the principal teachings of that “religion”. By the other side what I considered the most difficult to understand was what is Buddhism because most of the world consider it a Religion, but it doesn’t has a God, but it has spiritual figures, that is something that makes it more a lifestyle than a religion.

    1. Like we said on class, buddhism isn't a religion for some people, it is a path.

  8. Well I did understand almost all, I like the idea of Nirvanna and also I love the way in which we can see Buddha, like a teacher more than like a God. Also it was interesting to know what does it means Bodhisattva and see through videos the way they the help others to reach Nirvanna. On the other hand it was difficult to me to understand the relationship between Budhism and oter religion also it was difficult to understand some of the teachings of buddha maybe because the analogies.

  9. I agree with Tomita, that was what i like the most about buddhism. I think that the idea of been on the middle is a very important lesson of Buddhism because in this way we are, somehow away from problems and also this we should help us recover of any situation

  10. The eight fold was personally the most difficult idea to grasp. It's very abstract the way the eight fold path is explained.
In contrast to this abstract concept, there was the history of Buddhism, for example the Bodisatva which were very easy to understand examples.
