Everyone is brokenhearted. While we are glad that you’ll be home in the safety of your own country and with your families, we will miss you so much. In this blog, please share your thoughts and feelings at this time. How do you feel about each thing that is happening? What will you miss most about being here? What do you look forward to when you go home? This will be something that we can have forever as a memory of feelings and events we may forget in the days to come.

Why are two former SSRs so different?

A couple of you asked an interesting question as you summed up your interview with Gulnora.
Since we are missing so much classroom time, I thought we could use our blog to discuss this question. A couple of you asked how it could be that Uzbekistan and Ukraine have become such different countries since leaving the USSR. One seems to have freedom of the press and citizens who are comfortable with their government. The other seems to be a country that has to worry that the press is heavily influenced by the government and other countries. I want you to think very carefully how you might explain this. Respond to the post question and then reply to two classmates. Try not to just agree or disagree. Think carefully about what you are responding to.
